The St. Ignace Business Men’s Association was formed in 1895 with the purpose of continuing forward progress through attracting business and stimulating resort trade, in view of the dwindling lumber supply. This organization did not endure. In 1933, a Chamber of Commerce was organized but it lasted only a short time and it was not until 1955 that one permanently established.

City of St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority
Purpose and Governance
The City Council of the City of St. Ignace, recognizing the need to halt property value deterioration, to eliminate the causes of that deterioration and to promote economic growth, created the St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority by ordinance effective November 28, 1981. The DDA was created under Michigan Public Ace 197 of 1975.
Downtown Development Plan/Tax Increment Financing Plan:
To accomplish the goals set down for it, the St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority recommended adoption of a downtown development plan. To finance the plan, it was deemed necessary to adopt a tax-increment financing plan. Both were adopted in their original form in March of 1982 and amended in 1993 as a 20-year plan.
