THE MERCHANT JOHN ASKIN:
A FUR TRADER FROM MACKINAC
By Author and Indiana University Professor Justin Carroll
An Online ZOOM Event
John Askin, a Scots-Irish migrant to North America,
built his fur trade between the years 1758 and 1781
in the Great Lakes region of North America. His
experience serves as a platform from which to view
important aspects of the British Empire in North
America.
The biography is the first solely about Askin, who was a prominent
businessman (and also liquor smuggler and adversary to the expansive
Hudson Bay Company) during British control of the Great Lakes during the last
decades of the 1700s.
Register for this, and future presentations, on the
Michilimackinac Historical Society’s web page:

Justin Carroll holds a Ph.D. in History from Michigan
State University and is an Associate Professor of
American History with Indiana University.
