“BEFORE THE BRIDGE: A HISTORY AND DIRECTORY OF ST. IGNACE AND NEARBY LOCALITIES”

St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce was recently awarded a $3,000 grant from the St. Ignace Area Community Foundation and $5,000 grant from Enbridge. Thanks to these grants, the Chamber will be able to reprint the “Before the Bridge,” a book with the history and a directory of St. Ignace and nearby localities along with commemoration the opening of the Mackinac Bridge. In addition to preserving the book and the history within it, proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to boost both the St. Ignace Community Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce’s scholarship programs for local students.

The Kiwanis Club of St. Ignace, Michigan works to better the condition of life in the community and around the world. Club members realized 50 years ago the important to the community of perserving history for future generations. As a result, the book “Before The Bridge” was researched and written, primarily under the leadership and supervision of club member, Emerson Smith.

Copies of the book remained unavailable for decades, Recently, with the help of a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the club was able to arrange for this limited edition printing. First Edition 1957, Reprinted May 2003, Reprinted *TBD*
